Why do I need a EHO consultant at an event?
Event organisers aim that their events are a success but despite all the pre-event planning unexpected problems do occur during events and festivals which, if not dealt with quickly and in the correct manner, can pose food hygiene and health and safety risks that can result in ill health, serious injuries or even fatalities.

Local authority Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) inspecting food traders at events have a statutory power to close down any food trader that pose an imminent risk to health (e.g. due to having inadequate hand/equipment washing facilities). Councils can also take enforcement action and prosecute food business operators for breaches of food hygiene legalisation. New sentencing guidelines introduced in 2016 can now result in the courts imposing unlimited fines for serious breaches of food hygiene and health and safety.

It is often a requirement of event management plans or a licensing condition that event organisers exercise due diligence by having a competent person, such as an EHO or food hygiene consultant, onsite to ensure food hygiene compliance and health and safety compliance.
